Is a group leader at Universitat Abat Oliba CEU and Hospital Sant Joan de Déu (Barcelona), where he directs the Brain Metabolism and Personalized Therapies Laboratory. He is a biomedical scientist whose work focuses on understanding the metabolic basis of neurodevelopmental disorders, including autism, and translating this knowledge into mechanism-based and personalized therapeutic strategies.
During his doctoral research, he identified and characterized a novel branched-chain amino acid metabolic disorder within the autism spectrum, defining a targeted treatment and demonstrating that early metabolic intervention can significantly modify disease outcome. Building on this work, his research has expanded to the study of mitochondrial function, synaptic metabolism, and metabolic modulation as therapeutic targets in autism and related neurodevelopmental conditions.
In parallel, Dr. Oyarzábal is involved in the development of the Personalized Medicine Service in Pediatric Neurology at Hospital Sant Joan de Déu, integrating molecular diagnosis with individualized treatment approaches for complex neurodevelopmental disorders. He is also co-founder and CEO of Neuroprotect Life Sciences, a spin-off company dedicated to translating metabolic research into neuroprotective therapies for neurodevelopmental disorders.
